Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Oxfordshire

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a specialised oxygen therapy delivered in a pressurised chamber. By increasing pressure in a controlled environment, oxygen can dissolve more efficiently into blood plasma and body fluids, increasing oxygen availability to tissues throughout the body.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a non-invasive experience that involves spending time in a specially designed pressurised chamber while breathing oxygen. The chamber creates an environment where atmospheric pressure is higher than normal, which changes the way oxygen behaves in the body.

HBOT has been used in various contexts for many years. At Rebalance, we offer it as part of a wider wellbeing pathway, integrated with assessment, review and ongoing support rather than as a standalone service.

How HBOT Works

Oxygen is essential for cellular activity. Under normal atmospheric conditions, oxygen is carried primarily by red blood cells. When the surrounding pressure increases, as it does inside a hyperbaric chamber, oxygen can dissolve more readily into blood plasma and other body fluids.

This increased availability of dissolved oxygen may allow it to reach areas of the body where circulation is compromised or where demand is higher than usual. Oxygen is involved in cellular energy production and plays a supportive role in many of the body's natural processes.

It is important to note that individual responses to HBOT can vary, and we always assess suitability before recommending a course of sessions.

Potential Physiological Support

Research into hyperbaric oxygen therapy continues to develop. Based on current understanding, HBOT may support:

Cellular Energy Production

Increased oxygen availability may support the body's natural energy production processes at a cellular level.

Tissue Support

Oxygen plays a role in the body's natural tissue maintenance and can form part of a wider support strategy.

Circulation Support

Dissolved oxygen in plasma may support circulation and oxygen delivery to areas of higher demand.

Recovery Processes

HBOT may support the body's natural recovery processes as part of a structured wellbeing pathway.

Who Might Explore HBOT?

People explore HBOT for a range of reasons, and suitability is always assessed individually. Common areas of interest include:

  • Recovery support — as an adjunct during periods of physical recovery
  • Physical resilience — supporting the body during demanding periods
  • Performance support — as part of a structured approach during training periods
  • Proactive wellbeing — exploring oxygen therapy as part of a wider wellbeing programme
  • Healthy ageing support — maintaining vitality and resilience over time

Our Hyperbaric Chambers

At Rebalance Wellbeing Hub, we use professional soft-shell hyperbaric systems designed for comfort, safety and consistent delivery.

Easy Access Chamber

1.4 ATA

Designed for comfortable entry and accessibility, suitable for those new to HBOT.

Recliner XL Chamber

1.5 ATA

Spacious and designed for a more relaxed therapy experience with slightly higher pressure.

Both systems provide a controlled environment where oxygen is delivered under pressure as part of a structured wellbeing approach.

What Happens During a Session?

1

Screening and suitability review

Before your first session, we conduct a thorough screening to ensure HBOT is appropriate for you.

2

Gradual pressurisation

The chamber pressure is increased slowly and steadily. You may notice a sensation similar to the ear pressure felt during air travel.

3

Relaxing in the chamber

Once at pressure, you simply relax and breathe normally. Many people read, listen to music, or rest during this time.

4

Gradual decompression

At the end of the session, pressure is returned to normal gradually for your comfort.

5

Post-session review

We check in with you after the session and discuss next steps as part of your wider wellbeing plan.

Safety and Screening

HBOT is not suitable for everyone, which is why screening is an essential step before starting. During your Wellbeing Review, we will discuss your background, goals and any factors that may affect suitability.

Important: HBOT is offered at Rebalance as an adjunct therapy and is not a replacement for medical diagnosis, medical supervision or any prescribed course of action. If you are currently under the care of a medical professional, we encourage you to discuss any new wellbeing approaches with them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a painless and non-invasive oxygen therapy that involves breathing oxygen in a pressurised chamber.

What are the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

The increased pressure allows blood plasma to absorb more oxygen at pressures greater than sea level. This stimulates the release of more energy, which enhances the body's defence mechanism and promotes natural healing.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy creates an environment where oxygen can dissolve directly into the blood, tissue, and other bodily fluids. This may help to support:

  • Energy levels
  • Tissue function
  • Collagen, bone, and cartilage repair and regeneration
  • Reduction of swelling and inflammation
  • Pain relief
  • Immune system function
  • The body's antioxidant defences
What happens during an HBOT session?

There are several stages during a typical therapy session:

  • The first stage is compression, in which the chamber is pressurised to the required pressure
  • You may feel warm for a few minutes at the start of your therapy
  • You may feel a slight pressure in your ears or sinuses during the session. You will be guided by your HBOT therapist to relieve any discomfort
  • The chamber is maintained at this pressure whilst you breathe in the oxygen for the length of time prescribed (60–90 minutes)
  • You may feel sleepy during your therapy
  • The chamber is then depressurised, and your session is finished
  • You may feel cool and slightly tired at the end of your therapy
What does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy feel like?

As HBOT is a pressurised air therapy, the start and end of your session may feel like the take-off or landing of an aeroplane.

As the pressure builds in the chamber, the pressure builds within your ears, which may leave you with an ear-popping or fullness sensation.

This sensation should only last 10–15 minutes, and our guided HBOT Therapists will guide you to relieve any ear pressure.

Once the desired pressure is reached, you may feel sleepy, and you can relax and breathe normally for the duration of your session.

Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy safe?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is an extremely safe, non-invasive therapy, with very few rare potential side effects.

Your HBOT Therapist will discuss the safety aspects with you in detail at your initial assessment.

Our HBOT chambers have built-in safety devices to ensure that risk is minimised and that your safety and well-being is at the forefront of everything we do.

What are the side effects?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is extremely safe. The pressure used in our HBOT Chambers is mild, and therefore any side effects are extremely rare. However, it is common to feel slightly tired following your HBOT session.

Can I overdose on Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Our HBOT Chambers offer a mild level of hyperbaric oxygen, so overdosing is virtually impossible. However, our skilled HBOT therapists will develop a programme to ensure the correct levels are used for your requirements.

Will I feel claustrophobic?

Some people do feel claustrophobic during their therapy session; however most chambers have several viewing panels which have been designed to help prevent feelings of claustrophobia.

You will never be locked into the chamber, and it can be opened within 30 seconds if needed.

Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Painful?

No. The majority of people find HBOT sessions relaxing and peaceful.

Do I need an initial assessment?

Yes. The initial assessment ensures HBOT is safe and suitable for you.

To arrange an assessment:

Can anyone have Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

No. Suitability must be assessed before therapy begins.

How long is each session?

A typical therapy session lasts between 60–90 minutes.

What type of chamber do you use?

We use:

  • Easy Access 1.4 ATA chamber
  • Recliner XL 1.5 ATA chamber
